Ghiberti's first competition for the first set of bronze doors for the Baptistery of the cathedral in Florence. Once he was complete with the first set, he was commissioned to produce a second set. Thus, he won the prize offered for the best design for the second bronze door, the one on the north side of the baptistery.
The cathedral in which the doors reside in, used a style known as romanesque architecture, a term meaning "descended from Roman".It is built on the remains of a Roman building with mosaic ceilings. Other influences in the architecture are also shown such as a basiilica.
On each panel of the doorway, there were stories. Each panel depicted scenes from the old Testament, starting with the story of Adam and Eve. Then it moves to Jacob and Esau, and David and Goliath. These stories continue on until they end eith Solomon.
On the first door there are depictions of stories from the Old Testament. On the other hand, the door on the right side depicts stories from the New Testament.
