A Woman!?!? Doing That?!?! No Waaay

Galileo's Daughter

Galileo's daughter, Maria, was so important to him, that if he didnt have her, he would DIE before making any kind of historical changes. She had her hands on everything. She helped take care of her father by making him medicine and bringing in the food. Its like she's the one bringing the bacon home ;D
She was a very dutiful daughter and was essential in keeping him alive. She was even his editor for his book. Giving advice through her letters and prepared the manuscripts even though she had not been educated.

I'm Never Going to Persue Philosophy

St. Thomas Aquinas' Five Ways

First Way: The Argument from Motion

Aquinas' First Way is probably the one i find the worst...mostly because its the first and can easily be disproved, almost to the point of convincing me to not even read the rest. In this, he discusses how objects that are put in motion first need a preious object to move that object. So, who moved the first object? He claims that the the unmoved mover started the movement. Kinda like an endless row of dominoes but you cant seem to find the first dominoe that moved the others. That very first dominoe is believed to be the unmoved mover aka GOD! But...that means he's unmoving....that causes things to move, so wouldnt that really mean he needs to move in order to move the others? Or simply put, how is he moving things without physically moving?"If every object in motion had a mover, then the first object in motion needed a mover." Its like saying that the first dominoe didnt move to move the others, but then saying that every dominoe that moves needs to be moved by the previous dominoe that is moving. Its totally contradicting. Maaaan im never gonna try reaching my inner philosophical soul.

Ew Connection Time

St. Augustine/Gothic Architecture

We were asked to make a connection to St. Augustine’s philosophy to gothic architecture. St. Augustine was a philosopher always looking for answers on topics like religious topics. He believed that everything was predetermined by God so we wouldn’t be punished. However, he asked questions like why we sin then. He found a part of the answer from the Manicheans, in which they believed that we have a pure soul composed of light that is trapped into our dark physical bodies. In order to achieve happiness and salvation, we had to search for the light, or soul. By looking inward we feel this “inner experience.” By looking at gothic architecture, we are moving from the ways of Romanesque, in which there was no light. In gothic architecture, the point is to embrace the idea of moving away from the darkness and into the light. To emphasize on this, the outside of churches were portrayed almost dark and gloomy. On the other hand as you entered the church, there are these clerestory windows that bring in light, which are in turn illuminating on the colorful bible stories. This helps oneself to feel the different colors of light and inner experience.

Oh Geez Its Hitler

Mein Kampf by Adolf Hitler
Image and video hosting by TinyPic
NOT BY ME ITS BY PHOBS!

"Even the most superficial observation shows that Nature's restricted form of propagation and increase is an almost rigid basic law of all the innumerable forms of expression of her vital urge. Every animal mates only with a member of the same species. The titmouse seeks the titmouse, the finch the finch, the stork the stork, the field mouse the field mouse, etc etc etc"
Anyway I'm sure everyone is going to use this one haha...

So lets break this down in simple terms. The fallacy I see in this part of the reading is false analogy. That just means that the two things that are trying to be connected through comparison is not offered any proof. For example in in this passage he is trying to defend the idea of people not associating themselves with other races or ranks such as animals. Hitler however, sees that humans have a sub species when we actually dont. Thus, this connection between animal lifestyle and humans is completely false. But damn was he good at persuading many to kill millions of Jews.

Life As I See It

The Intelligent Design or Evolution?

Honestly, I dont care. I pretty much just live the now. Why? I'd prefer not to worry myself over matters like these. It distracts me, makes me think of the past and the future that I can't begin to form ideas on for myself. I'm just someone who walks on the pavements of Socal, not giving two shits about politics or even religion. However, I do have my morals and limits. The way people are taking away the idea of evolution in textbooks and replacing them with religious stuff(hope thats whats we were debating about) is absurd. Its just a theory, not a fact. Religious people getting all flustered about evolution is making me laugh now.

My fingers are frozen. Biiitch~

Barack Obama, son!

So today we had a debate in class...ugh just great. Another excuse to give to certain individuals so they can talk even louder and longer as their annoying voices rang in my ears for another period. Anyway, not its my turn to bring my opinion to the table.

Did the election of Barack Obama make affirmative action irrelevant?

One: Since when did Obama election now prove to the world that we are no longer a racist country?
Two: Having a black president suddenly means that the minority factor shouldnt exist?

Come on now, I dont want to shove my opinions down your throats but with affirmative action, it gives people a chance for a future. People like me who cant afford much of anything 'cause im so damn cheap and poor. Affirmative action helps promote equal opportunity amongst us. Saying we dont need it since there is no minority as we have a black president is ridiculous to me. Its like taking away reality where many of us ARE a minority that need this for fuck's sakes. Shouldnt we all be able to be given a chance even though were poor, black, latino, asian, etc etc?

Rules of Logic

Deductive Logic has three parts to it which is Syllogism, Modus Ponens, and Modus Tollens.

Syllogisms
All dogs smell
Calcetín is a dog
Calcetín smells

In this part, we use the formula A=B B=C C=A. In this example A would be "dogs" while B is "smell" and C is Calcetín.

Modus Ponens
If I start to draw, then my hand will explode
I start to draw
Therefore, my hand will explode

For this part, its hard to explain but easier to understand. Its almost like a cause and effect concept in which you understand that if i do this then there is this.

Modus Tollens
If I'm on my period, then i'm wearing a pad.
I'm not wearing a pad.
Therefore, I'm not on my period.

This part is similar to that of the modus ponen. The difference is that it has you understand the negative part of it. By this I mean that, you understand that if you do this then you do that. Buuut your not doing this so your not doing that
